Junju Seomun Methodist Church is a building with a delicate sense of form that does not emphasize frontality, and contributes to the formation of Jeonju’s traditional and clean street ambience. The cluster of small masses is a prominent feature of the building. However, this assemblage goes beyond mere form – the grouping of each brick to form a single mass signifies the establishment of a single church community. Rather than emphasizing grandeur by means of a massive spatial experience, Kim Jungchul attempted to express the contemporary value of religion through the building’s lighting in which light from above pours down softly and flows smoothly through the windows, and the design of an outer space which lacks a clear axis.
