Junglim's Technological Prowess

Technological prowess is not won overnight, but a result built up over the past years. It is often said that what distinguishes between economy and culture is the speed of development. Economy could rapidly grow with belt-tightening arduous production activities, but culture cannot develop in a short time. Science and technology also belong to the same type as culture in terms of development, as they can grow by continuous care and investment. Whatever level the technological prowess of Junglim Architecture is at now, it can be seen as a result of Junglim's care for and investment in technology for the past years. Tracing back to 42 years ago, we can see the three purposes that the founding architects Jeongcheol Kim and Jeongsik Kim established, each item of which are shown in the expression "Future-oriented technological activities, comprehensive grouping of technical staff, and promotion of technology improvement." This reflects the will of the then-young architects who thought that no matter how great a design intention is, it cannot be realized without the support of technology.

“Architecture is at once science and art.”

“Most works have curvy shapes, so that I do many studies on materials and constructions. Of course, the technical side is important.”

Richard Rogers and Zaha Hadid's words also stress that in all ages technology has been an indispensable item in architecture.
"Not a few large architectural firms have experienced the increase of scale and sale in proportion to the number of buildings whose scale and amount have increased, but it is doubtful whether or not their technological levels have improved as well." As a professor pointed out, our general reality might be pervaded with immorality and extreme pursuit of profits irresponsible for technology. However, Junglim refuse to belong to general design organizations. Since the early years of foundation, Junglim has made continuous efforts and investments to develop into an organization fit for the establishment purposes, which are still promoted by the young directors and employees. Also, it is the hard fact we know that Junglim's technological prowess is not judged by the internal evaluation, but assessed and determined for a long time by all those who use and maintain the building actually. We will endeavor to show how we carry out our social responsibility for those we are indebted to in the growth of Junglim to date, and do not spare more efforts and investments than we have done so far. We just expect our technological prowess will be highly evaluated from the outsiders' views.

It is not too much to say that the technological prowess of a design organization depends on the staff's abilities, the organizational structure integrating them, and the management's will, based on the relevant working environment. The larger the organization is, the more important it is to spend less time on redundant works across projects and instead focus more on design and technology. Also, communication is indispensable for the technological prowess of a large-scale organization which can easily become inflexible. Junglim aims at the quality assurance as well as the quality control of design. Our idea is that if a design error generate damage on the part of the client, it should be compensated as a matter of course. The issue of damage compensation is caused by the lack of technology rather than of design, we treat the reinforcement of technological prowess importantly. With the idea that any design intention should be supported by technical design and construction that reduce the errors in design process and make the maintenance of the building after completion more convenient, Junglim has entered into the stage of applying building information modeling (BIM) to projects and newly established a non-uniform design team earlier than other competitors. We firmly believe that these efforts and attempts will prove the evidence of Junglim's technological prowess after several years. Our organization and trajectory related to technology are summarized as follows.

1. Drawing Manual

During the design process for the new construction of Namhae Chemical Yeosu Fertilizer Plant in 1974, we designed according to the drawing manual of Flour, the world-renowned U.S. plant engineering firm. Based on the materials obtained in the process, we firstly established our own manual which has been used to date with supplement over several times.

2. Exchanges with Foreign Architectural Firms

Junglim performed following projects in collaboration with foreign architects by inviting them or dispatching our team overseas.

1974: Carried out the design and supervision of Plaza Hotel in Sogong-dong jointly with Taisei Corporation, a Japanese construction company.
1987: Dispatched to Nikken Sekei for 18 months' overseas training
1985: Korea World Trade Center (with Nikken Sekei), Severance Hospital Yeongdong Master Plan (with Ellerbe Becket)
1989: SK Group Central Research Institute (with CRSS), Samyang Corporation Central Research Insttitute (with Perkins & Will)
1992: Complex Building in Seocho-dong (with HOK)
1995: YUHS Severance New Hospital (with Ellerbe Becket)

3. Education

Since 1992, we have held in-house seminars every week by inviting guest lecturers under such themes as "What is the Problems of Exterior Materials?", "Architecture and Feng Shui", and "Waterproofing Defects and Countermeasures." This series of seminars has developed into the present Junglim Forum. Also, we hold an annual in-house training based on the synthesized opinions of the CS department on the problems and improvement directions found in supervision processes, and since 2003, we have been continuing the compulsory in-house training sessions for 33 hours a year targeting the employees in their 4th and 7th years.

4. Promoting Standardization and Computerization for Database Establishment

1976-1979: Completed Standard Detailed Drawing Collection as a blueprint book for in-house use.
1984: Introduced the CAD system (developing and selling the 3rd party in 1995).
1987: Published Architectural Details as the public version of the former in-house book Standard Detailed Drawing Collection.

5. Collecting Professional Publications and Developing Book Search Program

Since its foundation, Junglim has purchased and collected the largest number (about 15,000 volumes) of architectural publications amongst the domestic architectural firms, and developed the book search program based on building- or architect-based classifications.

6. Drawing Up the Comprehensive Design Report

Since 1980, we drew up the Comprehensive Design Report after submitting working design results. These reports are to acquire the analysis data on the effect of labor force input, construction cost, and the main construction materials for all processes, and then to utilize the data for the next similar projects.)
Firmly believing the fact that technological prowess is determined in the design process, Junglim holds three times of technical reviews during the projects by design departments. The technology lab provides various technological materials and holds the technical reviews. The reviewers are made up of the senior PAs of the technology lab and all the design departments, and the technical solutions presented in this process lead to the company-wide communications. Junglim's efforts to improve the technological prowess will continue to evolve in terms of both organization and project operation.
