Buyeo Lotte Premium Outlet has come a long way until it has finally come down to the current design motif based on the traditional culture in consideration of harmonious integration with the surrounding environment. The two-and-a-half-year design process started in May 2011 with the open design competition and has gone through several design changes until the final wrap-up in September 2013. The winner of the open design competition was an excellent concept for a commercial facility with contemporary style images optimized for the requirements of an outlet store. However, given the location of the outlet, which is in the middle of Baekje Historical Reappearance Complex, people agreed on a suggestion that a more restrained exterior design plan is required. There was continued discussion and an agonizing thought process as to what constitutes restrained design that incorporates the traditional style of the Baekje Dynasty until a final conclusion was reached: incorporate traditional themes found in the series of artifacts excavated while constructing the Complex, which include “chimi end tile” and “sumaksae roof tile” on the roof as well as the “ㅅ” shape flower pot that supports girders between columns.
